Susan Deer, dean of instruction at Rockland Community College, part of the State University of New York System, has been promoted to vice president of academic affairs there. Deer is responsible for providing overall leadership to the academic affairs division, implementation and management of educational policy, curriculum development, academic scheduling and programming, academic program review and accreditation matters. Since 2008, she served as dean of instruction at the college and was responsible for program planning, evaluation and administration in the instructional division. From 1983-2008, she worked for Orange County Community College, Middletown, as a full professor in the department of human movement, an associate vice president for the health professions, athletic director and as union president of the Staff and Chair Association. Deer holds a Ph.D. in education from Capella University, a Master of Science in biophysical focus of human movement, with a concentration in exercise physiology and kinesiology, from East Stroudsburg University, a Bachelor of Arts in liberal arts from SUNY Brockport, and an associate’s in art from Orange County Community College.
Reginald Sykes was appointed president of Alabama Southern Community College. Sykes comes to the system with many years of experience in all levels of education. He has served as a college vice president, a dean of student services, an adjunct and full-time instructor and most recently, as assistant commissioner for community and junior college relations with the Mississippi Trustees of State Institutions of Higher Learning. Sykes holds a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science degree from Jackson State University. His doctorate is in education school administration from Mississippi State University. “I am very pleased to have Dr. Sykes coming on board as the leader of Alabama Southern,” said Dr. Freida Hill, chancellor of the Alabama Community College System. “He brings a wealth of knowledge to the position and I know that he will be a great asset to the college and the system.”
Thayne McCulloh officially became Gonzaga University’s 26th elected president and the first non-Jesuit president. For the past year, McCulloh has been the interim president, following Dr. Robert Spitzer’s resignation in 2009, and for the last 20 years he has held various posts at the university, including positions in student life, housing, financial aid and academics.
Earlham College President Douglas C. Bennett announced he will retire at the end of June 2011. Bennett has been president since 1997. He plans to take 2011-12 as a year of “intellectual and spiritual renewal,” after which he hopes to remain involved in issues of accountability, access, learning and assessment. A timeframe for replacing Bennett has not yet been determined.
Lawrence Barrett, vice chancellor of enrollment management and student services at Purdue University North Central, has been named president of Eastern Maine Community College.
Mark Frison, president and chief executive officer of Great Plains College, has been chosen as president of Assiniboine Community College. The Board of Governors voted in favor of the selection committee’s recommendation at the regular meeting of the board. The committee short listed the candidates from 12 applicants. “We’ve gone through a thorough and extensive selection and recruitment process with extremely strong candidates. This made the decision very difficult,” said Board of Governors Chair Harvey Armstrong. “We believe Mark will provide the college with strong leadership at a time when the college is experiencing a lot of growth and change.” Frison, who holds a master’s of industrial relations from Queen’s University, has been serving as president at Great Plains College since 2005.
Stacey Franklin Jones, senior vice president at Benedict College, has been selected as provost and vice president for academic affairs at Bowie State University. Steve Pawluk, professor and department chair of education and leadership at La Sierra University in California, has been promoted to provost there.
Steve J. Schwab, interim chancellor of the University of Tennessee Health Science Center, has been appointed to the position on a permanent basis. ♦
