The old adage goes, “With a new year comes a renewed sense of commitment to achieving one’s educational goals.” This month’s annual 2009 CCME Symposium in Honolulu, Hawaii, promises to offer a varied blend of leading military and civilian educators whose singular purpose is to ensure their students reach their New Year aspirations. With current economic challenges as they are, CCME institutions and partners are offering innovative ways for students to maximize financial resources in reaching academic milestones. In an in-depth interview with incoming CCME president James Sweizer, Military Advanced Education provides a forum for Mr. Sweizer as he sheds light on his hopes and plans for the consortium in the coming year and beyond.

With CCME 2009 as a backdrop, new initiatives with DoD’s educational support network are presenting greater program accessibility to military students deployed in the most remote of locations. Advances in online education through programs like the Army’s GoArmyEd portal are giving these distance learners all the tools of the classroom without the time constraints associated with on-site education. As one of the premier military institutions of higher learning, the United States Sergeants Major Academy prepares non-commissioned officers for the challenges they’ll face on the 21st century battlefield. Many of these concepts can be applied directly to careers beyond the service in fields such as business management as transitioning servicemembers prepare to enter the corporate boardrooms of America.

These stories including a focused interview with outgoing CCME president M. Kathleen Connolly can be found in this issue of Military Advanced Education, online at www.mae-kmi.com. Please feel free to contact me with any comments or suggestions.
