Editor's Perspective
As the Spring 2009 semester nears season change, online and distance learners of all walks are preparing for the challenges of mid-term testing outside the classroom. To address their concerns, organizations like DANTES and the Department of Defense are working to offer more options to fulfill course requirements through testing while helping military students clear the hurdle of higher tuition rates. Partnering between institutions of higher learning and the military services are producing programs that offer greater flexibility for deployed service-members to reach their academic goals of attaining a degree of certification.
This issue of Military Advanced Education offers readers a focused look at education and the U.S. Marine Corps, posting an in-depth interview with Brigadier General Melvin Spiese, Commanding General of the U.S. Marine Corps Training and Education Command, and an interview of Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps Carlton Kent, the Corps’ top enlisted officer. In each, the men lay out their thoughts regarding the current state of Marine Corps education and where they feel it should be headed. Feature topics in this issue involve the latest technologies being used to address the needs of distance learners, improvements to online learning as an educational option, and a forwardlooking profile of a distance learning format offered at Western Governor’s University that can enable active and transitioning servicemembers to complete a degree or certificate program more easily than ever before. These stories including a focused interview with Dave Clinefelter, provost, Kaplan University, can be found in this issue of Military Advanced Education, online at www.mae-kmi.com.
